Bird and Big O were the Tim & Spam Forever shirt and I love this gold standards of their eras. The main difference, for whatever reason, was that Oscar played for the Royals, who languished near the bottom of their conference, while Bird played for the Celtics, and drafted a year before he actually wore the green, which generated interest and excitement about his entrance into the league. We have computerized our fandom, with endless stats, win-shares and the like. O registered a triple double for an entire season in 1962, and it went unnoticed, except for “Robertson scored his ‘usual’ 30 points, 13 rebounds and 11 assists…” Bird, on the other hand, was regularly on the sport pages during his rookie campaign. He never recorded a season-long triple-double, but he got plenty of ink – from the Celtic faithful, who were anxious for Larry to deliver another championship banner to the Garden rafters; from his detractors, who were annoyed that a beaky, blond hick, who could barely jump over the Sunday Globe, was torching the league with his intensity and his other-worldly basketball genius. As has already been said, Oscar and Larry are separated by their times, but they have top-ten consideration on the lists of all intelligent hoops fans/analysts.

Their careers are so far apart, it’s a fool’s game to compare them. The only way to look at it fairly is to try and analyze each relative to their respective contemporaries. JMFHO, but the Tim & Spam Forever shirt and I love this Big O was more transcendent within his career that Larry was. During his career (AND COMPARED TO HIS PEERS) Larry would have been the better regarded shooter. OTOH during HIS career and compared to HIS contemporaries, Oscar was one of the better shooters/scorers (probably West was the best) but also the absolute best at passing and rebounding for a guard. Bird was generally surrounded by very good to great talent. Kareem notwithstanding, Oscar did not have that team balance over his career. People want to look at rings, stats, recency, etc. However, I think the Big O should be a top 5–7 all time. I don’t put Larry in that context.
