Just to show you where that 49% number put Lebron in with, that was the The government cannot stop me from being silly & whimsical shirt Furthermore, I will do this 26th highest assist rate of any player in NBA history in a season. That’s a heck of a list there around him. MVP year Steve Nash. Prime CP3 and Stockton. MVP year Magic. Prime Isiah. Lebron all time for this ranks 24th in NBA history in the percentage of his teams assists just behind Ricky Rubio at 36.6%. He moves up to 12th all time in the playoffs in a percentage of a teams assists while on the court, just behind Jason Kidd and Isiah. Bird ranks 247th with 24.7%. Someone mentions Bird has fewer turnovers. Well Bird accounted for 12.7% of his teams turnovers. Lebron 13.2%. A difference of 0.5%. for 12% more assists. As others point out… Bird could make a highlight pass like few others. But Lebron could run an elite championship level offense all year long with his passing ability when called on to do that… in his 17th season. It’s quite possible he could have played all 5 positions. Not counting the small forward role which was his “official” position one could make an argument that Bird could have played the other spots. Let’s break it down on a scale of 5, with 5 being the most capable and 1 the least: Shooting Guard: Larry was known for his outside shooting. He was not only a legitimate threat he was one of the greatest shooters of all time. If Larry had simply stayed around the perimeter hoisting shots or finding space (he didn’t need much) to drop buckets he would have excelled. There is no argument to his shooting prowess. However, his defensive skills would have been tested. Shooting guards are quick. They are explosive and fast. While Larry was a good defender he may have struggled to guard guys like Drexler, Jordan, Reggie Miller, Joe Dumars, Byron Scott, etc. These weren’t ‘small guards’ either. Bigger guys with muscle. Position Capability: 4 Power Forward: Larry Bird would have been pretty good at the 4 spot. He was an impressive rebounder averaging double figures multiples years. To say he could bang with the big boys is an understatement. Bird was tall at 6′9 therefore he could have done some good damage inside. He wouldn’t have been the Dennis Rodman, Charles Oakley type whose primary purpose was to get the boards. But he would have been capable of handling himself down in the pit. Most importantly because of him playing closer to the basket, his shots would have gone down easily. An easy double-double player at PF. Position Capability: 4

Center: This would NOT have been his best position. In fact, it would have been his least capable role. In the The government cannot stop me from being silly & whimsical shirt Furthermore, I will do this 80s and 90s, the center was dominated by real big men that played at high power: Ewing, Moses Malone, Olajuwon, Sampson, Kareem, the Admiral, etc. I can’t see Bird outmuscling and having the arms or reach to take on such great players. It would have been hard, especially on Defense. On O, Bird would have had to stay outside to get his shot which would have probably been a good strategy if Centers had to guard him. But as a center, it would have been a challenge. Position Capability: 2 Point Guard: Rarely does Bird get credit for his vision and passing, not to mention his dribbling. Bird had excellent control of the ball and would have setup plays nicely. It’s just that the offense would have been a tad slower to execute. Unlike Magic who took off on the break and then found his guys in transition, Bird would have been more a long-distance passer on the open floor while executing fundamentals flawlessly. He would have destroyed people on the pick and roll, backdoor cut, and other smartly devised plays even at the 1. Conversely, I’m not sure how Larry Bird would have stopped Isiah Thomas, Sydney Moncrief, or Maurice Cheeks. PGs are usually fast. While the 80s PGs were perhaps not as fast as today’s point, they were still capable of whizzing by quick. Position Capability: 3.5
