It got to the point where anyone waving it as a flag was assumed to be a supporter of these opinions. It does seem to be getting better. I’ve noticed normal people using it as a normal flag again. I would say that if you wish to show it, then you’ll want to put a Union Jack next to it so it says ‘patriotism’ and not ‘fuck black people’. As for the details, I would think about why people might be upset looking at a symbol they’ve seen in the hands of people who literally want to kill them. Sure, to someone like me or you the England flag means England, but to others it’s not so benign.

No British person would be so uncool as to wear a T shirt, let alone one decorated with the union flag. Some of my friends have comedy union flag underpants or socks, but they only display them when very drunk or at the Last Night of the Proms. My Scottish and Welsh and English friends may have garments decorated with their national symbols to be worn at sporting events, but since I have never attended such an occasion I couldn’t swear to it. As to the northern Irish, ever since I was discombobulated by an Orange march in Edinburgh I have regarded the sash and bowler hat as de trop. Ditto the drinking of Stout and draping oneself in a hopeful tricolour.
