Off TikTok, White is as perky as she comes across in her videos to her 4 million followers, speaking in an 80-20 English-American accent that befits a Brit living in Los Angeles. She’s back in California after fashion month—she traveled to Paris and Milan—and, unbeknownst to her, is about to go on vacation. (“I booked a last-minute trip to Mexico tomorrow, just tried on all my summer clothes, and nothing fits me anymore,” she relays on TikTok a few days later). A bursting closet and racks of overflowing clothes surround her, a tall brunette with a tiny braid running down her center part, mint green nails, and a sherbet orange fuzzy sweater. Of the Detroit Pistons Saddiq Bey Big Diq Energy shirt and I love this Prada affair, she explains that she was loaned a bag and accessories for the show but was responsible for finding her own outfit. It was her first time at the show and “literally one of the biggest moments of my career so far,” she says. “I just wanted to put a little twist on it, a little twist to make it my own.”
As soon as she saw the Detroit Pistons Saddiq Bey Big Diq Energy shirt and I love this jumpsuit in the store, she saw the vision: a crop top, a miniskirt, and leg warmers. Doing it impromptu in her hotel room, in full glam, was classic White, and it also made the stakes seem higher. One wrong move and she’d have nothing to wear to the show. (No, she didn’t bring a backup). It also meant she’d attend the show with fraying and imperfect hems. “A lot of people were like, ‘Oh, but the raw edges,’” White says. “And I’m like, ‘I’m going to go home and finish the edges. I just don’t have a sewing machine with me in Milan.’” Stunt-like though it may seem, White insists that she intends to keep her creation in her closet for years. “It was a beautiful, beautiful jumpsuit as it was. And I didn’t want to touch it unless I knew I was going to be able to wear it afterwards,” she says. “I can wear the skirt on its own. I can wear the top on its own.” She takes a beat. “Probably wouldn’t do the leg warmers—just, like, walking the dog.”
