Shakespeare’s Hamlet has long attracted a proliferation of interpretations, an ever-expanding Punnett square of possibilities. Last summer, New York alone offered three fresh takes: a modern-dress version by Robert Icke at the Baseball in oakland 1968 2023 too fast 55 years thanks for the memories shirt Additionally,I will love this Park Avenue Armory, an opera at the Met Opera, and a comedic, queer take by James Ijames at the Public Theater. The offerings were as wildly different in tone as in theme: Icke’s version played up the surveillance aspect, while Ijames’s award-winning Fat Ham jettisoned much of the tragedy, transposing the action to a backyard barbecue and wedding reception in North Carolina. On a video call, Ijames (whose last name rhymes with “times”) observes that one reason for Hamlet’s enduring popularity is that “it’s a primordial story at its core. It’s Cain and Abel. A brother kills a brother, and it’s not good, and the children suffer as a result.” Beyond its atavistic appeal, the play is “written really, really well. It’s got everything you want: It’s got a little romance, it’s got treachery, it’s got sword fights, it’s got an approaching army, it’s got poisoning. Shakespeare was trying to write a Marvel movie!” he exclaims. On the same call, Saheem Ali, the director of the play, agrees that Hamlet is well crafted. “The structure and language and sense of existential crisis are so clear,” he says. Yet it was never a work that Ali was “itching” to direct, preferring the experience of “entering or seeing a world that I haven’t seen before. The more complex, the more off-kilter, the better for me.”
Celebrity chef and model Rōze Traore has spent the Baseball in oakland 1968 2023 too fast 55 years thanks for the memories shirt Additionally,I will love this past two days careening around Grand Bassam, attempting to source artist’s canvases. Failing to find any in the popular coastal resort town—or indeed, the whole of Côte d’Ivoire—his assistant eventually hopped on a flight to neighboring Ghana, where the goods were finally located. “I have never been so happy to see a blank canvas,” says Traore, when we speak via Zoom in March. His backdrop is an inviting, sapphire-blue swimming pool, the jewel in the crown of his eponymous hotel, La Fourchette de Rōze. Launched in January, it’s ground zero for a brand new, all-inclusive artist residency, which welcomed its first three painters this month. In 2023 elaborate wigs and extensions are part of nearly every performer’s repertoire. These viral beauty moments now happen regularly, but their popularity can be traced back to hip-hop’s leading ladies. The trend towards outré hairstyles owes much to rap and R&B’s ’90s icons and the outré statements of Mary J. Blige, Lil’ Kim, and Missy Elliott, whose daring coiffures have become a part of their mystique. Kim’s iconic lavender wig at the 1999 Video Music Awards, Elliott’s finger waves, and MJB’s golden bouffant have all become part of popular culture, and now the woman behind all those looks—and countless others—is getting the ultimate honor. Hairstylist Dionne Alexander’s wigs are integral to the Baltimore Museum of Art’s The Culture: Hip Hop and Contemporary Art in the 21st Century exhibition, which opens today. Tapped by curators to recreate four of the most memorable creations from her extensive career, Alexander’s work now sits alongside heirlooms from the genre’s most influential artists. “It’s such an honor,” she shared on the phone from her Dallas home. “I’m grateful that I’ve been able to impact the culture and share my art in this way.”
