Now, she’s finally taking those stories out into the Mickey mouse Donald duck pluto dog dog goofy 2022 merry Christmas sweater but I will buy this shirt and I will love this world; first in a series of tour dates around the U.K. that culminated with two sold-out shows at London’s Kentish Town Forum, and more recently stateside, where she performed a handful of secret shows (including one in New York’s Union Square, photographed here) and made her American TV debut on Late Night With Seth Meyers. “It’s been amazing,” says Crookes during a brief moment of downtime. “As much as it’s a lot of pressure and it can be quite overwhelming, there’s something so cathartic about performing again.” Born to an Irish father and a Bangladeshi mother in south London, Crookes grew up in the multicultural neighborhood of Elephant and Castle, where she taught herself to play the guitar and piano before beginning to upload covers to YouTube. It was there that her management first spotted her at 15. “I was so passionate about music, so it was second nature for me to write songs,” says Crookes. “It was like keeping a diary. But yeah, to be honest, I didn’t really think it was a viable career path. It felt very out of reach, it felt like something that just wouldn’t happen to, I guess, a normal person.”
