But with the collapse of the Roman empire in the 5th century AD and their subsequent withdrawal from Britain, the baths fell into ruins, only being rediscovered and restored during the frenzied period of archeological interest of the Victorian era. That’s enough history for now: you can breeze through the Roman Baths or wander the Jane Austen-worthy Regency backdrops at your leisure when you visit. What you really need to know is that the restorative, mineral-rich waters of Bath’s natural springs are still very much present. And while there are only a handful of places you can enjoy those very waters today, over the past few years, a new guard of spa hotels are reviving the cutting-edge spirit of the city’s original spa offering (with the advances of modern medicine, we no longer need to look to the baths as a means of curing our tuberculosis, after all) while also honoring the rich heritage of the city’s spa culture.Courtesy of Lucknam Park
