“If you can make a comedy that works, you tend to stay in that world, because it can be incredibly lucrative,” Wilde tells me. But she wanted a challenge after Booksmart, which isn’t to say she wasn’t nervous about shifting gears. “Sophomore slump is a real thing,” she admits. If you really think about it, are you willing to blow up the system that serves you?”
